The rumour mill is on turbo at the moment as we await the latest U2 offering. Bono is confident it could be there best ever. In a recent Q magazine the provisional track listing of the album was revealed. (this was taken from www.atu2.com/newalbum/)
- Q magazine’s album preview mentions the following songs, some of which are new and some previously mentioned:
- “Magnificent” (”classic U2isms” … “atmospheric sweep”)
- “Crazy Tonight” (will.i.am worked on this one)
- “Stand Up” (”swaggering” … “coruscated Edge guitar work”)
- “Get Your Boots On” (”a heaving electro-rocker”)
- “Winter” (”about a soldier in an unspecified war zone”)
- “Unknown Caller” (”stately”)
- “Moment of Surrender” (”a strident seven-minute epic recorded in a single take”)
- “Breathe” (Eno loves this song)
- “No Line On The Horizon” (there were two versions being considered at the time)
- “Every Breaking Wave” (Bono: “We might be on to something special there.”
Apparently we are gong to get all the option to buy the album on vinyl, in a box, with a poster a book, you name it.
REM used to be my favourite band by a long way with U2 rocking up second. But looking at the last few albums REM’s output has been decidedly bland in comparison. There have definitely been some great singles coming out of Athens Georgia but nothing to compete with the consistency of albums like How to Dismantle an Atomic BombĀ or All that You Can’t Leave Behind. We wait with eager anticipation the new album from the greatest band in the world.
Here are some sneak peaks available on youtube:

Agree with you on REM. I purchased my last REM CD way back in 1992. Here in Canada, their albums have not done well. However, after a friend bought me a copy of Accelerate, I am re-impressed…nothing better than a band who pays homage to George Herbert, eh? Check out their live version of “Living Well” done in the back-of-a-car:

On the U2 front, what can I say? They are enormous. I first saw U2 on the Joshua Tree tour. Bono had a broken arm and I still remember singing 40 as we exited the stadium. Over the years, Bono’s forays into universalism are shallow and the cynical side of me remains unsettled in my opinion about his social action. All the same, I enjoyed U23D immensely.
Cheers,
Thanks for your message – I did like a couple of songs on accelerate – and got the car version of “living well” on itunes it is excellent. I think his charity work is highly commendable. Thanks to the image of God even the most flawed people can do great things…
